Results of my Reading Material Survey

In January, 2004, I sent out a reading material survey to my colleagues in Informatics. My goal was to find what people read to keep up to date on industry trends and other news. I asked what magazines people read, what web sites they read, if they subscribe to newsletters and if they read blogs. Here are the results:

Web Sites

  • slashdot.org
    • High on all lists. News for nerds, stuff that matters.
  • news.google.com
    • Not tech news per se but second only to Slashdot on everyone’s list
      • I’ll add a personal note to check out Google News Alerts. It lets you put in a search criteria (say, Isis Pharmaceuticals) and you will receive an update once a day via email with a list of links to news articles which contain references to your search criteria. It rocks.
  • eWeek
    • Third on the list
  • DV
  • Internet.com
    • World encompassing geek news and trends from our British neighbors.
    • World news and events with a slant for the odd and bizarre
    • This isn't tech news, but it's a great resource for finding products of any kind.

News Letters

eWeek

XML.com Update (O'Reilly)

Blogs

  • O'Reilly has several that are great!
  • Blogspace hosts the Google blog & has a page on RSS Readers
  • An interesting article on blogging and why people do it can be found here. It is talks about Lotus Domino but the interviews with several bloggers and why they blog can be expanded to the blogging community as a whole.
