Notice: Moving the Blog
Tech.Life.Blogged has moved!
I've moved the site to /www.techlifeweb.com because it is a much easier URL to remember. If you are subscribing to my feed via feedburner, you shouldn't have to change anything. If you are using the old atom feed I broke you. Sorry about that. Hopefully I haven't lost anyone and that if you did use the old feeds you'll resubscribe.
If you are one of the unfortunates, the new feed is here.
This old site will stay around for archival purposes and of course my tips and tricks pages are still around.
Hopefully I'll like the new home and we can all continue to collaborate and communicate as we have always done.

How to discover cool things
Someday you will start tagging. In fact, start now. You don't even have to 'get' it yet. Just do it. Blog and tag it. And even better (ANYONE can do this even if they don't blog) LINK and tag it!!
To discover cool things you have to have just a couple things. Good part is, they are free.
1. Firefox
2. Del.icio.us
3. A passion for something and the will to learn everything you can about it
Got it? Good. Now go to http://del.icio.us/ and click on a tag in the "all tags" column. Or, if you know a tag, type the whole thing like http://del.icio.us/tag/google in the case where you'd want to look for 'google' as a tag. Once you get your results screen, click on the "Add live bookmark" at the bottom of the screen (the
Ok, so you don't technically have to have Firefox and live book marks. You could do this with any RSS aggregator but live bookmarks give you the advantage of quickly checking a link, looking through the latest drop-drown feeds and you'll quickly discover what people have recently been linking to in your favorite topic.

Slacker Manager: Bookish tags
Slacker Manager points to this article over on 800-CEO-READ Blog called Tagging: Making it easier to find biz book information where there is a proposal for everyone talking about business books to use businessbooks as a tag. I say tag early and tag often. Just keep your tags relavent. Slacker Manager makes the point that agreeing on a tag goes against the will of the web and I'd have to agree to a point.
What may be worth talking about is how to tag when you have something that can be plural or something that could potentially be a verb or action.
"Firefox" for example is a no-brainer. It is easily tagged. "Podcasting" is potentially dangerous. In my mind a "Podcast" is a show and the tag should relate to it as such. Singular. No "ing". Now if there is software that I am talking about to create podcast my thought is to tag it "Podcasting".
Maybe we are all better served if it is tagged both ways? Same goes for "businessbooks". Do we need that "s" at the end? Will a search for "businessbook" find a article tagged with the "s" at the end? It should.
I agree whole heartedly with the premise of "squishing" the words together. I think about this alot, living where I do. Seems much more efficient to tag something "sandiego". I know that del.icio.us would see "san diego" as 2 tags.
I should also mention what the other articles didn't and that is pinging. If you blog you should ping. Blogger has a check box to let you automatically ping Weblogs.com when you post but another method I like is http://pingomatic.com/. Pingomatic.com lets you ping many places at the same time. Doing so will get your tagged items "out there" and indexed. Don't wait for the indexing engines to come crawling. Tell them there is something new.

NIMIQ - enclosure ripper extraordinaire
I've been trying out a new podcast aggregator (podcatcher?) for Windows called NIMIQ. I've been using it for about a week and I really like it so far. It automatically adds my downloaded feeds into Windows Media Player (WMP 10) (works with iTunes too). Then I just sync my little mp3 player using WMP 10 and go.
My only slight complaint is where the "hide" button is. I'd rather have a check box to minimize to system tray or just expose the hide button on the bar instead of having to go to a sub menu. Yeah, it's just an extra click but it's not needed. Go check it out.

Wikalong Firefox Extension
I've just discovered a extension for Firefox called Wikalong. It is curios and cool. May take a bit to see how totally useful it is but so far I like it.
What it allows you to do is open up a side frame in your browser window. In that frame you can write notes. When you leave the notes, they get saved for others to see and comment on. So it is like instantly having a comments frame on any web page.
Equally interesting is that you can go to a page and subscribe to an RSS feed of all the latest posts to any page on the web. We'll have to see how much I use it over time. Let me know how you are using it.

Right-click Add Live Bookmark extension for Firefox
Do you use Live Bookmarks in Firefox? They are one of the wonderful underused features of Firefox. The point of them is to have a live, drop down links to other articles in an RSS feed. Basically a kind of built in aggregator.
Personally I find them no good as an RSS reader. I'd rather use something like Sage or Bloglines because then I get bits or all of the article instead of just the title.
However, Live Bookmarks rock when it comes to del.icio.us as I've blogged about before.
One other handy thing is, if you use Sage, you can feed it Live Bookmarks an it will use them in its aggregator. Sometimes even though it appears there should be a live bookmark on a page you don't get the icon in your status bar because the site designer didn't add the property correctly for auto discovery. To combat this, you can add the Right-click Add Live Bookmark extension. This extension lets you right click on any link on the page that says XML and create a live bookmark from the link.
