Where do you listen to podcasts?

Do you listen to podcasts? Have a del.icio.us account? (I blogged about del.icio.us a few days back)
I had an idea today were we could all use the del.icio.us service in an interesting way. What you would do is create a del.icio.us link and in the 'extended' section simply put the location where you listen to podcasts. This way, everyone who links to a podcast will be listed in del.icio.us, you'll be able to see if anyone else in your area listens to the same podcast and the podcast creators could see what areas of the world were subscribing. Here is a screen shot of the del.icio.us add link page so you can see what I'm talking about.
Link to del.icio.us screen shot
My original thought was that this could be used by listeners to get together or simply find each other. Haven't quite figured out the 'how' to that but I thought I'd throw this idea out there and see what people think.

Google Desktop Search Plugin for FireFox

Ok so here is an awsome plugin for Firefox if you use Google Desktop Search. It gives you the ability to add GDS as one of your search options like this:

Which, by itself is cool. However, even more awsome is that if you use this, you can get around the stupid 10 results per page that GDS imposes.

Firefox: 0.5 market share and climbing! Interesting article in PCWorld.com: Interesting quote:
"'Our customers tell us there are two driving forces behind switching from Windows to Linux: cost, and vendor independence,' Bancilhon told Techworld. 'Ultimately one of the ways the desktop will evolve from Windows to Linux is by replacing the applications running on top of the operating system. Once customers move to OpenOffice and Mozilla, changing the underlying OS is a no-brainer.'"

More Picasa 2 stuff...

John Battelle has some interesting remarks about Picasa and Google's Marketing Strategy.
And PC Magazine has their Picasa 2.0 review.
And here is a comparison from Search Engine Watch: Google Picasa 2 Vs. Adobe Photoshop Album 2

Picasa 2 is here

Picasa: Photo management software, free from Google. Find, edit, share photos.
""With Picasa 2, we've made it easier for people to find, organize, improve and enhance their photographs, as well as create photo CDs, personalized slide shows, desktop collages and much more," said Lars Perkins, general manager at Picasa."

And they've done an awsome job. I've only started to put Picasa 2 through it's paces but I can tell you it rocks.

Yahoo! Desktop Search review by PC Magazine

PC Magazine does a review of Yahoo! Desktop Search
YDS has almost all the features of X1 Search version 5, which will be released by the end of January, along with a Search Web button that links directly to Yahoo! search online. The main X1 features not present in YDS are support for Eudora and Mozilla e-mail clients, the ability to index offline PST files in Outlook, and support for indexing remote drives across a network

I haven't tried it yet. Since I user Thunderbird it sounds like it won't do everything I want. I'll give it a test and report back.

eWEEK Labs Review: Thunderbird 1.0

Review of Thunderbird 1.0 mail client in eWEEK Labs Review:
"The Mozilla Foundation's free Thunderbird messaging client offers a good alternative to low-end e-mail clients such as Microsoft's Outlook Express because of its extensive set of well-put-together features and broad platform support relative to free competition. Although Thunderbird's multiplatform support makes it a good option for mixed environments, its calendaring components don't measure up to groupware clients such as Outlook or Notes."

del.icio.us

I've been using del.icio.us for a few weeks now. This wonderful service is available in any browser but it ROCKS in Firefox. I'll tell you how below. First, from the site:
del.icio.us is a social bookmarks manager. It allows you to easily add sites you like to your personal collection of links, to categorize those sites with keywords, and to share your collection not only between your own browsers and machines, but also with others.

So what you do is link to things and apply tags to what you link to. You can then view all your links by going to your homepage at del.icio.us/USERNAME. You can see mine for an example: My del.icio.us links
You'll see all my links and a list of tags down the right hand side. Clicking on one of the tags will bring up all links in my del.icio.us site that contain that tag. For example all my del.icio.us Firefox links.
Now you'll see a box with related links and, the cool part, a like to other peoples bookmarks containing the same tag. This is really awsome because it quickly becomes a way for you to find other interesting sites beyond a simple Google search. These are sites that humans find relevant.
I can hear you saying "what is the relevant to Firefox?" Because all of the above is available as an RSS feed to Firefox as a Live Bookmark. You just go to your del.icio.us page and then click your browser's Live Bookmark icon. You will be asked where to put the bookmark. I recommend the "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder". Then, you just click the link and all your bookmarks flow down as LIVE RSS feeds.
You could also have different Live Bookmarks for your various taged bookmarks. This would let you separate and organize them naturally. This way, all your 'Firefox' tagged items will be together and separate from all your 'digital photography' tagged bookmarks.
And, oh by the way, you can access your bookmarks from any computer with a browser!
Are you getting why this is cool yet? You have to try it.

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)

Microsoft released the beta of it's new Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware application today. I decided I'd try it out.
Before you can dowload it, Microsoft suggests you verify that your copy of Windows is Genuine Microsoft Windows. I chose not to do this as I was browsing their site with Firefox and this test looks like it uses ActiveX. You can still download the app if you don't verify your Windows.
I was glad to see that I could get to this beta with Firefox, unlike Windows Update.

The download is 6.4MB, about 2MB larger than Spybot Search and Destroy.

After the install you can choose to run the application. It has some interesting features to select the first time through:
* Auto Updater: Keeps all the definitions up to date similar to your anti-virus program.
* Security Agents: Microsoft equates these to bodyguards. They monitor system, application, and Internet changes and activity for anything potentially hazardous.
* SpyNet(TM): Connects users together for sharing information about unknown spyware applications and signatures. Automatically reports potential threats identified by the AntiSpyware real-time system agents.
* Daily auto-scans: You can set it to scan everyday. 2AM is the default and you can change it after the install.

It told me a complete scan of my system would take about 30 minutes. I didn't time it but it was easily half that or less. When you are done, if it finds something, you can have it clean or quarantine it. You also have the option of setting a system restore point before it takes further action. This is a great feature because you can go back if something drastic occurs. Spybot has this feature as well.

Overall I think this product will have some traction in the market simply because once it is set people don't have to do too much more. However, running a browser like Firefox that helps avoid some of the exploits in the first place will go a long way to keeping your system safe. Also, a firewall like ZoneAlarm, even on a dial-up connection, is highly recommended because it will prompt you when anything new is on your system trying to access the Internet and then you can scan your system for problems.

User Agent Switcher Firefox Extension

Personally I have only 1 website I cannot use with Firefox. My employer has a time capturing system that uses ActiveX so I need to use IE to access it. Really no problem because I just click the link then use the IE View extension.
User Agent Switcher Extension will make your browser 'appear' to websites as a different type. For example, you can use the safety of Firefox and when you go to websites, the site will think you are using IE. This can be cool for getting into sites that won't let you unless you have IE. The agent can be toggled on and off via the tools menu or you can add a button to your tool bar that changes to indicate you have switched the user agent.
It comes with descriptions to make your browser appear as Default, Internet Explorer 6 (Windows XP), Netscape 4.8 (Windows XP) and Opera 7.54 (Windows XP).
