Workaround for IDN Spoofing Issue
Yesterday I blogged about what I had hoped was a permanent fix for the IDN Spoofing Issue. Turns out it wasn't quite permanent because you had to redo it if you added or removed a plugin.
Over in the MozillaZine Forums there was this ingenious work around for the IDN Spoofing Issue. It involves useing the AdBlock extension (which you should use anyway because it rocks)
A simpler way of fixing this is as follows :-
1. Install the Adblock Firefox extension.
https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&os=Windows&id=10
2. Look at the Adblock 'Preferences' and go to 'Adblock Options'
3. Tick 'Site Blocking'
4. Add the following filter :-
/[^\x20-\xFF]/
This will block any URL that uses characters outside the normal ASCII range.
Don't miss step 3! I did the first time and the tip didn't work.
Once you have it in place, go to the test site and the links simply don't go anywhere.
Thanks to Kevin Millican!
Here is a link to read more about AdBlock in my Firefox Help, Tips and Tricks.
I'm certain there will be a more permanent fix out soon but this fix works well and you don't have to do a bunch of unhiding and editing and so forth. Plus, you get the great features of AdBlock if you never used them.
