Joho the Blog: Tags, labels and piles of leaves

Interesting thoughts on tagging web pages and blog entries: Joho the Blog: Tags, labels and piles of leaves
...we're creating this context-free realm of free-floating metadata, like word magnets on a refrigerator door, that we will paw through and assemble, and, most important, do things we haven't yet thought of.

There is a lot going on in this space with sites like del.icio.us and Technorati. I'm not so sure the average internet users knows about it yet. They don't really need to be aware of it from a browsing stand point if we do it well. They do need to know about it if they build content or link to a page.
It's like cleaning up that file cabinet upstairs. If you look at it by yourself it looks like a daunting task but if you get everyone out there to pick up a piece of paper, label (tag) it and file it where we could all then view it things would go much faster.
Then, in a tagged world, as we start to browse, we may start to find interesting intersections of tags and begin to think about things in new ways.
As the author points out, we just need to start. Stop worrying if it is perfect and just begin tagging.
