- hangar/hanger: a hangar is an airport building; a hanger is something used for hanging clothes, pictures, or other objects
- healthy/healthful: healthy is a condition of good health; healthful is what supports good health
- historic/historical: historic is renowned or uniquely outstanding; historical deals with whatever has happened
- he or she: Many use this form to avoid a false, inaccurate generic “he” or "she"; overuse is awkward and inelegant. Pronouns should first be replaced with appropriate nouns before employing this phrase. Sometimes rewriting to plural works. “He or she” is vastly preferable to he/she, s/he, (s)he, and other awkward, artificial, and ugly inventions. Using a generic "she" or switching between "he" and "she" as generics are devices that detract from overall content of a message. Sample Solution: When a doctor considers the feelings of his patient, he will sometimes see himself. Can become: When a doctor considers the feelings of patients, the physician may accomplish self-revelation.
- Hobson’s choice: means no choice available, not dilemma. The term is based on the rule of Mr. Hobson, a stablekeeper, who told customers they had to hire the horse nearest the door or none.
- hopefully: writers and speakers will dodge criticism by only using hopefully with the accurate meaning of “in a hopeful manner”; but, the word is more often used with the meanings of “I hope” or “it is hoped." Such confusion reigns that some believe any use of hopefully to be "wrong." Eliminating it from one's vocabulary is safest.
- humane/humanitarian/humanistic: humane is benevolent or compassionate; humanitarian is bighearted or munificent; humanistic is relating to humanism
- homicide/murder/manslaughter: homicide is a legal term for killing or slaying; murder is premeditated, malicious homicide and should not be used without qualification (accused of murder, tried for murder, convicted of murder); manslaughter is homicide without malice or premeditation
