Douglas McCarron’s “Island Campaign”
concerns the Japanese and U.S. confrontation in the Pacific Ocean during World War Two. It can be played by email with others, or solo if you wish. It uses a simple game system that allows multiple movements and combat in a turn. Yet it also teaches fire control and and support and unit placement, all important tools to know. Included are Kwajalien, Tarawa, Peleliu, and Anguar Island. These games are not static rat hole hunts like so many Pacific conflict games of the past. Both sides can move and fire during the same turn, and you never know how each battle will go. As the Japanese you will be mainly on the defense, but you have to plan your over lapping fire to stop the forward movement of U.S. Troops and inflict as many losses as you can. As the U.S. Player your units are stronger but do not assume that you can just bludgeon the Japanese as you will be cut to shreds. You have to move troops to get into position to make attacks facing the least amount of counter fire from the Japanese. You learn how to develop right tactics to keep your losses low and achieve victory.
