1 NOTE      Henry Chapman was born in 1800 in county of Kent, England. His family were members of th
2 CONC e Church of England. In England prior to 1837 all Christening, Marriage Banns, Marriages an
2 CONC d Deaths were recorded in the local Parish Church Registers. Once a year, all the recorded pa
2 CONC rish activities  were also recorded in the Bishop Transcripts as required by law. It is fro
2 CONC m these original Church of England records we got our earliest recorded CHAPMAN Family roots.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Henry Chapman married Ann Bates on the seventh day of July in the year 1822 at the Paris
2 CONC h Church of Aylesford, Kent County England. Mariage record number 137. They were both member
2 CONC s of this Parish. Apparently at this time Henry Chapman could not write. The record shows h
2 CONC e placed a mark next to his signature. Ann Betts did sign the marriage certificate herself.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      This was apparently a double Wedding as Richard Bates the brother of Ann Bates married E
2 CONC lizabeth Rufsel that same day. Marriage record number 138. Richard Bates signed the marriag
2 CONC e record himself. The record shows, "The mark X of Elizabeth Rufsel. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT       Their first child of Henry and Ann Bates was Mary Ann, born in 1823 in Kent. The next f
2 CONC ive of their children were born in West Farleigh Parish, Kent England. After Mary Ann twins w
2 CONC ere born Thomas and Henry Chapman. They were christened 27th June 1824. Next was John Chapman
2 CONC . He was christened 30th April 1826. Then followed Joshua. He was christened 11th May 1828. T
2 CONC heir last child born in England was Martha. She was christened 4th July 1830.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Hy Chapman left Kent in 1833 and took the ship "George Washington" to New York with hi
2 CONC s destination listed as  Canada. Ann Chapman with their children in 1834 traveled between Wes
2 CONC t Farleigh, Kent County England and Upper Canada. They sailed on the Vessel Olympia to New Yo
2 CONC rk and then travelled to Upper Canada.  Henry Chapman with his family became a residents in t
2 CONC he Township of Vaughan, County of York in June of 1834.  The Land Records for the County of Y
2 CONC ork, Township of Vaughan in Ontario Canada show that Henry Chapman on 24th of June 1834, purc
2 CONC hased 200 Acres of farm land known as lot 32, concession 5 . Deed number 11738. Henry Chapma
2 CONC n continued to operate this 200 acre farm in Vaughan until his death.  In my research it wa
2 CONC s noted that the farm Henry Chapman bought in Vaughan was the next farm lot to a farm belongi
2 CONC ng to Margaret Chapman. What the relationship was if any has so far has not been established.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      The Land Records for the County of York, Township of East Gwillimbury, Ontario Canada sh
2 CONC ow that Henry Chapman on 2nd of December 1845, purchased 9 Acres of land known as lot 106, 1s
2 CONC t concession west. Deed number 5755. Henry Chapman was a resident of Holland Landing from 184
2 CONC 5 to the year of his death in 1874. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT       The land was purchased from Honorable J B Robertson. At the time of purchase a part o
2 CONC f this land was in West Gwillimbury. There was a realignment of township boundaries to correc
2 CONC t this problem. Lot 106 is adjacent to the town of Holland Landing, Ontario Canada. There i
2 CONC s a street marked CHAPMAN on this property and it intersects Yonge street. Henry sold a porti
2 CONC on of lot 106 to the Northern Railroad. The Rail Road Station for Holland Landing was built o
2 CONC n this property. Henry Chapman was the first station agent in 1853.
2 CONT      
2 CONT      This was a busy station in those pioneer days. For the thirsty travellers and local folk
2 CONC s Henry had his brewery conveniently located right  next to the passenger platform of the Nor
2 CONC thern Rail Road.  John Chapman operated the Toll Gate for Yonge Street at that roadway. Thi
2 CONC s last Toll Ticket issued for that Toll Gate is in the Ontario Archives in Toronto. Henry an
2 CONC d Joshua the sons of Henry Chapman senior  made bricks for the local buildings on this same l
2 CONC and.  Henry Chapman senior died January 19, 1874. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT      In September of 1979 I had the original Christ Church records searched to find any refer
2 CONC ences to Henry Chapman and descendents. A copy of this letter is included as a source documen
2 CONC t. It was very informative and after much additional research the puzzle came to-gether.  Hen
2 CONC ry and Ann Chapman are buried at Christ Church Cemetery, Holland Landing Ontario Canada.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      At a later time the Ontario Genealogical Society, Toronto Branch published a document,nu
2 CONC mber EGW-002. This document has recorded all the graves in Christ Church Cemetery in  Hollan
2 CONC d Landing, Township of East East Gwillimbury, York County Ontario. I was pleased that this do
2 CONC cument verified my own findings from prior visits to Christ Church Cemetery.

2 CONT 
2 CONT The  Will of Henry Chapman, 1873,  Holland Landing Ontario, Canada.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      I Henry Chapman of the village of Holland Landing in the county of York and the provinc
2 CONC e of Ontario do make publish and disclose this my last will and testament in the manner follo
2 CONC wing, viz. First I direct that all my just debts funeral expenses and the cost of  attendin
2 CONC g the execution of this will be paid from my personal estate.

2 CONT      Secondly I give devise and bequeath to my wife Ann the use of my House and Land situat
2 CONC e south of the station  grounds of the Northern Railway in the village of Holland Landing o
2 CONC n lot number one hundred and six on the west side of Yonge Street together with all the house
2 CONC hold furniture beds bedding to hold use and enjoy the same during her natural life jointly wi
2 CONC th my daughter Elizabeth.

2 CONT      I also further direct that the yearly rent derived from my farm in Vaughan be divided eq
2 CONC ually between my wife Ann  and my daughter Mary Ann and Elizabeth share and share alike so lo
2 CONC ng as my wife shall live said bequest to my wife if accepted by her to be in lieu of all he
2 CONC r right and title to Dower out of my Estate. I further give and bequeath to my sons Thomas Ch
2 CONC apman and Joshua Chapman the sum of five dollars each and no more.

2 CONT      I give and devise and bequeath to my son Henry Chapman his heirs or assigns the residu
2 CONC e of my real estate in Holland Landing being all of that portion situated North of the afores
2 CONC aid station ground of the Northern Railway on lot one hundred and six on the west side of Yon
2 CONC ge street together with the Brewery Houses and other buildings erected there on, also all sin
2 CONC gular the utensils, Barrel Horse Wagons, Sleighs and implements these to belongings of whic
2 CONC h I may be possessed at the time of my decease. Subject however and on the condition of his p
2 CONC aying to Thomas Chapman and Stephen  Chapman the sons of Joshua Chapman the sums of one hundr
2 CONC ed dollars each on their respectively becoming twenty one years of age.

2 CONT      I further give devise and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth her heirs or assigns my hous
2 CONC e and lands  situated south of the station grounds of the Northern Railway in the Village o

2 CONC . His parents home at that time was 54 Augusta Ave. in Toronto. His lower grade school was Ry
2 CONC erson. He wanted to become a dentist. His mother wanted him to work for his father. He bowe
2 CONC d to his mothers wishes. Disliking school he eventually left and entered the business world
2 CONC . He worked for his father as Sales Manager of Ontario Wind Engine and Pump Company. At a lat
2 CONC er date he became President of the Thor Canadian Co. whose head Office was in Chicago.

2 CONT      Frederick William Chapman, son of Stephen Henry and Mary (Hunter) Chapman, was born in T
2 CONC oronto, November 24, 1885, and received his early education in the public schools of the city
2 CONC , and intended to comple his studies at the Upper Canada College. His first employment was wi
2 CONC th the Ontario Wind Engine and Pump Company, where he remained for a period of fifteen years
2 CONC . Beginning as a clerk he worked up to the position of general sales manager and a place on t
2 CONC he directorate, then in 1914 he resigned to go into business independently. At that time he t
2 CONC ook over the active management of the Hurley Machine Company, which was founded in 1905, an
2 CONC d of which his father was president.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Mr. Chapman, as previously stated, followed his father in the presidency of this institu
2 CONC tion. Under the name of the Hurley Machine Company, Mr. Chapman acts as the distributing agen
2 CONC t for Canada of the "Thor" electric washing machines, ironers and vacuum cleaners. The busine
2 CONC ss was located formerly at No. 514 Yonge street, but the salesrooms are now in the Ryrie buil
2 CONC ding and the assembling plant is on Queen street West. They also have spacious warehouses o
2 CONC n Abell street, Toronto, and branch offices and salesrooms in Hamilton, Ontario.

2 CONT      Mr. Chapman was a member of the Toronto Board of Trade and the Retail Merchants' Associa
2 CONC tion, and participates in the programs of both for the development of the commercial life o
2 CONC f the city. He is an active member of the Young Men's Christian Association and serves on th
2 CONC e committee in charge of the physical department, holding that keeping physically fit is a vi
2 CONC tal factor in success. His church affiliations are with Marantha Hall, and he is a director o
2 CONC f the Upper Canada Bible Society.

2 CONT      Mr. Chapman married Lillian Slade Ball, daughter of Abraham Ball, of the Ball Suspende
2 CONC r Company, of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Chapman have three daughters: Gladness, Joyce, and Mary a
2 CONC nd two sons, Eric Earl and Stephen Harold Chapman. The family home was at the corner of Fores
2 CONC t Hill road and Huron street, Toronto.

2 CONT      The Chapmans, father and son have been in turn at the head of the Hurley Machine Company
2 CONC , of Toronto the younger man succeeding to the presidency upon 'the death of the elder in 192
2 CONC 1. Toronto business annals contain the record of Stephen Henry Chapman as an able, upright, f
2 CONC orceful man of affairs, while in the civic and religious circles, to whose work he gave devot
2 CONC ed leadership, his memory is treasured as that of a man vision-inspired and faith-sustained i
2 CONC n good deeds. Frederick William Chapman is a member of the progressively active group of Toro

2 CONT      Stephen Henry Chapman was Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Yonge Street Missio
2 CONC n in Toronto Ontario Canada from 1915 to 1921. This rescue mission is still in operation in 1

2 CONT      Stephen Henry Chapman married  Mary Hunter. He built a magnificant house for her and the
2 CONC ir family to be. They lived there until 1919. This Chapman home still stands  to-day  as maje
2 CONC stic as ever at 14 Old Forest  Hill  Road.  In the center of Forest Hill village. The site o
2 CONC f the original Forest Hill Village is on Spadina Road a few blocks North of St. Clair Avenue
2 CONC .

2 CONT      In  1923  Forest  Hill was incorporated as  a  village.  The boundaries were defined a
2 CONC s Eglinton Avenue to the North,  Bathurst Street to the West, Avenue Road to the East and St
2 CONC . Clair  Avenue to  the South. This was a residence for many wealthy families.  A premier  pl
2 CONC ace  to live. This village is also home  to  two  very  exclusive  private schools. Upper Can
2 CONC ada College (UCC)  for  boys  and Bishop Strachan School (BSS) for girls.

2 CONT      The  following paragraphs are  directly quoted from the Memorial issue of  the  EVANGELI
2 CONC CAL  CHRISTIAN  magazine  published in Toronto Ontario, December 1921.

2 CONT                The Passing of S. H. Chapman
2 CONT Toronto  Christians felt a distinct sense of loss  when  the unexpected news of the sudden de
2 CONC ath of Mr. Stephen Henry Chapman was announced in the evening paper on November 4. 1921
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He had been  to a  meeting the previous evening and seemed in his  usual Health. He  wil
2 CONC l be missed from many circles of Christian activity, outside of Maranatha Hall, where he usua
2 CONC lly worshipped. He was one of the Directors of the Yonge Street Mission,  in which  he  too
2 CONC k a very active interest.  He was a member  of the official Board of the Upper Canada Bible S
2 CONC ociety.  Then for  many  years  he has been the President of the Toronto  Jewish Mission, an
2 CONC d  a member of the Council of the Sudan Interior Mission.   All of these interests he serve
2 CONC d until his death.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      While the work  in  Redemption  Home was being carried on he was one of  the  trustees a
2 CONC nd vitally interested in its work of rescue. We cannot forget,  either that he was the firs
2 CONC t President of Evangelical Publishers in Toronto.
2 CONT 
2 CONT    In  all of these associations he was generally beloved,  and  his  council greatly prized
2 CONC .  While he was a man of deep conviction,  he was never combative and ever sought those thing
2 CONC s  that  made for harmony as long as the principle was not sacrificed.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Mr. Chapman was born 61 years ago at Holland Landing, Ontario.   His parents were member
2 CONC s  of the Church of England, Christ Church in  Holland  Landing and it was their ambition tha
2 CONC t he should become a clergyman. He  was  very well  versed in the ritual of the Church,  bu
2 CONC t  he knew  nothing of regeneration. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Stephen Henry came to know His Lord under the ministry  of  a passing evangelist outsid
2 CONC e of the Church of England. This evangelist brought the Gospel message unto him. This accepta
2 CONC nce of Christ  meant eternal life and salvation to him, just as he was drawing near to manhoo
2 CONC d years.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      It  was a great grief to his parents at that time  that  his new  found joy, received th
2 CONC rough the channels outside of  the  old Church, should  lead him to seek his Christian  fello
2 CONC wship  in other directions.  But so strongly were his new convictions that, believing he shou
2 CONC ld confess his faith openly in baptism, although it  was in the middle of winter, and a hol
2 CONC e had to be cut in the ice for the ordinance, he thus publicly made his new confession.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      The cleavage in the family fellowship was partly responsible for his decision to come t
2 CONC o the City of Toronto.  He took up life there  without a dollar of capital.  It is not our ai
2 CONC m to  follow the  vicissitudes of his business career, except to remark that in  the times o
2 CONC f prosperity he ever delighted to honor  the  Lord with  his  substance.  His heart and his h
2 CONC and were ever  open  to every cause that he felt was really furthering the will of God on ear
2 CONC th.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Throughout his whole career he was connected with the people known  to others as Plymout
2 CONC h Brethren, but he never imbibed the spirit  which has characterized many who have entered th
2 CONC eir  fellowship.  He welcomed direct association with other Christians in all  branches of th
2 CONC e Evangelical Church, and joined with them in various Christian activities.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He  sought  to use his influence ever to  promote  the  true  unity  of the whole body o
2 CONC f Christ, and the welcome  he received  and the wide-ness of his ministry should indicate th
2 CONC e way in which  many others  in the special brotherhood with him could  have  a  wider  minis
2 CONC try  to the whole Church, to whom the  rich  treasures  of  truth unfolded by the early leade
2 CONC rs of this movement would be of  untold blessing. In  maintaining the relationships that he d
2 CONC id our departed  brother compromised no principle and gave up no cherished conviction. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He will be missed and mourned not only by the Assembly  at  Maranatha  Hall in which h
2 CONC e had taken such a deep  interest from its  foundation, and was indebted to him for almos
2 CONC t  a  pastoral  concern,  but  by the whole circle of Christians with  which his  numerous ac
2 CONC tivities brought him into contact.
2 CONT He  has finished his course. He fought the good fight. He kept the faith. He loved the appear
2 CONC ing of our Lord. Henceforth there is for him the crown.
